Probably cubists were influenced by photography that allowed to discompose surfaces as art didn’t do before. In painting, probably it was the first step towards abstraction. Sculpture in some way could have been always cubist, as originally departed from a stone cube, so in such a case, the process is reverse and they have to step back returning to the original stone. Cubism where actually in architecture long time ago and people like Le Corbusier retook it. Now, it seems that cubism have fade away, but Mondrian squares, even never considered cubist, remain in our minds
